In the last of a four-part series, we continue our case study of examining McDonald’s use of protective laminates to safeguard their fleet graphics program.

The third type of protection is Polyurethane (PU) Substrate Lamination. It is designed to extend UV and abrasion protection in harsh environments, and its appearance and mode of application is similar to the PVC laminate mentioned in the last issue of Brand News. Since PU is also a substrate laminate, it handles easily during application and removal.

Both clear coat and PVC laminates typically offer seven-year warranties on vertical applications, with the exception of some desert regions in North America. PU laminate extends the warranty to 10 years and can even offer horizontal UV protection for as long as five years.
Another benefit of using PU laminate is its superior abrasion resistance and remarkable ability to self-heal. Some trucks in the McDonald’s fleet have 24 inch vertical panels of PU laminate applied to both sides at the rear of the trailer to protect their graphics from the extreme abrasion caused by lading dock seals. The cost of PU laminate is a bit higher than PVC laminate, but the added durability surpasses all other types of fleet graphic protection!
